Mauritian Style Potato Soup – Kids Version

By V

Did you ever think of making soup with the main ingredient being potato?

Let me tell you that it’s absolutely yummy – it tastes like dal!!!! I promise you that you will love it. I do this dish at home and thought I’ll give it a try with my toddler. I start getting bored with only dal, lentils, greens soup etc… so to bring some variety, check this recipe:

I have used a mixed roasted spices that I call “karisiyon”, I do not know if it is the correct name but it is a mix of anise seeds, mustard, methi seeds and some urad dal. I bought mine from the market but if you do not have it, you can simply use methi seeds (fenugreek seeds)

Instructions
  1. Prepare your ingredients.
  2. Mix of anise seeds, mustard, methi seeds and some urad dal. I bought mine from the market but if you do not have it, you can simply use methi seeds (fenugreek seeds)
  3. In some oil, add the roasted spices, onion, thyme leaves and ginger garlic paste.
  4. Add the potato cut in circles.
  5. Let cook for 2 minutes.
  6. Add boiling water enough to cover the potatoes. Allow to cook for 10 minutes on low flame.
  7. Add a whole tomato and cover the pan.
  8. Allow the tomato to break by itself with the heat - still letting all on low flame.
  9. This is how it should look like after another 5 minutes. I crushed the potatoes with my spoon while still hot. You can also use a masher. READY!!
Recipe Notes

Always consult your pediatrician before giving new ingredient to your baby.

You can serve with rice and maybe cooked liver, or another non-veg.
